Trenches

At the beginning of the Neolithic period, people began to build large ditches. The systems are very different. There are circular, multi-row ditches, trenches and sectional fortifications, sometimes in combination with ramparts or palisades, sometimes a series of closely spaced pits. In archaeology, we can talk about earthworks, circular ditches or trenches. Their purpose is not always entirely clear. Theories vary from protective structures and fortified settlements to calendar buildings and places of assembly or worship. With regard to some facilities, an interpretation as a cattle pen is even possible.
