Early man

Sites from the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods are few and far between in Saxony. Due to the extensive expansion of the inland ice from Scandinavia and the hostile climatic conditions during the ice ages, humans mostly only penetrated the area of today's Free State during the warm phases. Nevertheless, we can still find traces of early Homo sapiens, Neanderthals and even Homo erectus in Saxony today. Archaeological evidence can be found of early human settlements, field stations and resting places.
